Back to the Future, de natte droom van iedereen die is opgegroeid in de jaren ’80. De DeLorean DMC-12 heeft mede daarom al de nodige aandacht gekregen op autoblog. Maar nu is het tijd om de BMW van bad boy Griff Tannen in de schijnwerpers te plaatsen.

Griff reed in Back to the Future Part II rond in een BMW 633 CSI “hover craft”. En BTTF fanboy Jeff Chabotte heeft de auto die gebruikt is in de film weten op te sporen en hem helemaal gerestaureerd. De auto is nu weer in dezelfde staat als toen de film gemaakt werd. Alleen kan de BMW (helaas) niet zweven. Dat is dan wel weer jammer. (via: Jalopnik)

Het complete verhaal achter de restauratie:

In late 2004, I was presented the opportunity by a fellow Back to the Future collector to acquire a huge piece of memorabilia from the films. That piece turned out to be the BMW used by the character Griff Tannen in the future sequence in the Café 80’s and hoverboard chase sequence. After making my way down the east coast from Connecticut to Georgia with my dad, we were soon in possession of the car. We ended up hauling it on a u-haul trailer on the back of a Jeep and smack-dab into the center of the blizzard of that December, right on the D.C. Beltway. We finally made it home safely and the work began.

What you’re probably interested are the details. It’s a 1976 633 CSI. This was the first year of production for the 6-series and this car was one of the first 400 off the line. From what I gather and during my restoration I found that it appeared to be originally silver. The car is a Euro-spec model with less than 75K miles on it. This was the model that BMW introduced the status panel to the left of the steering wheel. Also, that beautiful shark nose has always been my favorite BMW styling cue. The car was a gray-market import, but the paperwork has long-since been lost.

Going through the car, was quite a rush. I had approximately a month to hunt down missing parts from the movie, replace the interior, fix previous bodywork, fabricate missing bodywork and paint the car and get it ready for a car show in early February. After contacting another car guy who had some available space to work on it, the car was hauled to his garage and work was quickly started.

As you can see from some of the pics, there is a lot of one-off fabrication done on this car. The roof was chopped off and steel beams welded to the undercarriage to obtain the roadster look, without having the car fold in on itself like an accordion. Replacing where the rear window sat, was a custom deck lid that had long since disappeared. A temporary job had been put in place, but I decided to hack it to the core and build a new one out of fiberglass and bondo that more closely resembled the screen-used version.

Some hover conversion parts were scattered all the way up to New Jersey and I was able to locate those and then get them to a prop house in New York for reproduction as the originals were badly damaged. Speaking of originals, 3 of those tires are still original from the film, along with the broken taillight lens.

A few long and excitement-filled weeks later, the car was ready for showing. Think of the high-pressure you see on “American Chopper” and multiply that by like 10, remove the jerk attitudes and high-budget shops and tools and there you have it.

Currently, I’m hoping to find a dealership here in the northeast (or anywhere) that would like to display the car in exchange for working on it. There is still a lot to be done with the car, like getting the drive train straightened out, along with wiring the 320i taillights in, and making it roadworthy. Oh, that’s right, I don’t NEED roads.

    Dit doet me denken aan Joe Bortz. Hij zag in dat ook de auto’s die GM maakte in de 50’er jaren voor Motorama, wat GM gebruikte als PR-middel om hun onuitputtend positieve blik op de toekomst te tonen, te belangrijk waren om te laten verpieteren. Zo is hij bezig een aantal van deze tijdloze klassiekers te restaureren, zoals de ’55 Chevrolet Biscayne: http://www.bortzautocollection.com/old_site/assets/pdfs/BiscayneAutoRestorer.pdf

    Motorama was dan ook fantastisch, ook al is het jaren voor mijn tijd geweest. Die uiterst positieve blik op de toekomst, conceptcars met bosjes, en de hele vibe van de 50’er jaren in de Verenigde Staten maakte het een unieke plek in de tijd dat wij hier nog druk bezig waren er weer bovenop te komen na de Nazi’s. Een goed voorbeeld is het promo filmpje dat GM maakte ter promotie van de Motorama van 1956, Design for Dreaming, waarin ze overigens ook een keuken tonen, omdat ze in die tijd ook eigenaar waren van Frigidaire (nu Electrolux): http://www.archive.org/details/Designfo1956

    Motorama auto’s zijn overigens op Pebble Beach 2008 voor het eerst sinds tientallen jaren gezien geweest, zoals onze vrienden van autoblog.com ook netjes hebben gemeld: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-gms-motorama-cars-at-pebble-beach/ Kijk toch eens wat een pareltjes allemaal! Overigens mooi te beseffen dat het uniek is dat er zoveel nog bestaan, aangezien GM opdracht gaf de meeste te vernietigen na de show, aangezien de auto’s er goed uitzagen, maar verre van uitontwikkeld waren. Ze wilden uiteraard niet dat iemand er eentje in handen kreeg en liet zien dat de droom eigenlijk een technisch drama was. Daarom juist is het werk van Joe Bortz zo ongelofelijk lastig. Ten eerste zijn het work-in-progress auto’s, en zijn ze grotendeels ook nog vernietigd.

    Maar dit is allemaal minder relevant, omdat het meest opvallende is wel hoe schril deze tijden in contrast staan met de huidige staat van GM. Een zoutloos bedrijf, die nog steeds lichtjaren achterloopt op de Europese automarkt, en aan het randje van de afgrond staat. En als je bekijkt wat ze allemaal konden en geloofden in de 50’er jaren, dan kan je eigenlijk niks anders dan ze verwijten dat ze er een ongelofelijk rotzooi van hebben gemaakt.

    Jammer dat hij geen foto’s heeft van de auto in de staat hoe hij hem vond.

    @ Timmah: Kijkt u snel BttF deeltje 2 eens, op de foto staat ook een shot uit de film. Waarschijnlijk had Griff een ongelukje gehad linksachters en stond het daardoor in de primer.

    @Citrofiel, vind ik ook, en dat vind hij zelf ook, dat deed ie omdat die naar een of andere show ging met de auto, hij gaat hem nog verbeteren door het kapotte achterlicht te vervangen en over te spuiten zodat hij ermee op de weg mag.

    @ Audiofreak; Aha, dus zo zit de vork in de steel. Goed te weten. Voor zo’n show kan het inderdaad leuk zijn. Overigens, het wel of niet spuiten zal toch geen effect hebben op of hij ermee de weg op mag? ;) Het achterlicht natuurlijk wel.
