Met een extra capabele SUV eronder.
Het is weer halverwege mei, dus is het tijd voor de Overland Expo West in Arizona! In het stadje Flagstaff is er een enorme beurs waar het voornamelijk gaat om het betere survival-gevoel.
Overland Expo West is een soort Kampeerbeurs, maar dan voor Amerikanen. We kunnen veel zeggen over onze vriendelijke vrienden aan de overkant van de plas, maar niet dat ze het concept kamperen niet goed begrijpen. Bij ons is kamperen in een file van vouwwagens naar Zuid-Frankrijk togen, om vervolgens daar alles uit te stallen en de van huis meegenomen piepers te gaan schillen.
Dan hebben de Amerikanen het beter begrepen. Natuurlijk zijn ze ook geholpen door enkele staten waarbij een groot gedeelte uit fantastische wildernis bestaat. Honda heeft de automobiele oplossing voor de welgestelde en sensatiezoekende avonturier. Hun laatste wapenfeit is de Honda Passport Adventure Lifestyle Project. De Honda Passport (afbeelding boven en onder) is Honda’s middensegment SUV. De eerste twee generaties waren Opel Frontera’s met een Honda-badge.
Maar in december van 2018 werd er een compleet nieuwe Passport aan het publiek voorgesteld. De Honda Passport is een maatje kleiner dan de Pilot en wordt niet alleen gebouwd voor Amerika, maar ook ín Amerika. In samenwerking met Jsport werd de Adventure Lifestyle Project gebouwd. De auto is voor de goede smaak met bijna 4 centimeter verhoogd. Om de motor te beschermen tegen keien en dergelijke is er een metalen plaat onder de motor aangebracht. De Passport Adventure Lifestyle staat op 18″ wielen van Jsport met Nitto Ridge Grappler banden.
Een groot nadeel van kamperen in de wildernis, is dat je geregeld opgegeten wordt door hongerige puma’s of kodiakberen. Om die kans te verkleinen is er een tent op het dak gemonteerd, zodat je rustig in de nacht kunt snurken. Je kan via een trapje je slaapvertrek bezoeken. Het is wetenschappelijk vastgesteld dat puma’s niet op ladders kunnen klimmen, dus dat moet wel snor zitten.
De motor is gelijk aan die van de standaard Honda Passport, dus een 3.5 liter grote V6 SOHC i-VTEC met 290 pk. Over serieproductie wordt met nog geen woord gerept. Gezien de populariteit van dit soort auto’s in de Verenigde Staten moet je er niet gek vanop kijken als er een soortgelijke auto bij de Honda dealer staat. Wil je de Honda Passport Adventure Lifestyle Project in het echt zien: de Overland Expo West is geopend van 17 tot 19 mei.

Nee de Amerikanen hebben het helemaal niet begrepen. Overlanden is voor mij een heel continent doorkruisen.
Zij bouwen leuke trucks en gaan daarmee in hun eigen (vrij grote) achtertuin spelen.
Ik geef ze daarin groot gelijk, maar de term Overlanding is daar gewoon een marketing term voor iedereen die ik eigenlijk wil kamperen met z’n 4×4.

Ik ken genoeg Canadezen en Amerikanen die de hele zomer met hun RV het hele continent doorkruizen. Dit is een manier van vakantie; “RV-ing” Eigenlijk niks ander dan kilometers vreten en camperen. Mijn oudere buren hebben een motorhome en vertrekken morgen voor een tripje van drie maanden. Via de westkust naar San Diego en dan doorsteken, dwars door het midden van de States naar Chicago, om vervolgens via het Noorden weer naar huis te komen…..

@slowland: Dat is wat anders. Die zijn er inderdaad genoeg. En gelijk hebben ze. Zo ook in Europa genoeg die met camper rondtrekken. Vaak pensionados, maar mooi als het eerder kan.
Maar Overlanden is bij hun kamperen met 4×4, vaak de daktent etc, en een Jeep of Landcruiser of wat dan ook die vaak wel enigzins gemodificeerd is (al is het maar grote grove banden)
Waar de helft dan alleen maar weekendjes mee weg gaat. En dan rijden ze soms gigantische einden om op een mooie plek te offroaden en dan snel weer terug voordat de werkweek begint, want vrije dagen hebben ze amper. Dan chargeer ik, niet iedereen doet dat natuurlijk, maar onder die noemer kun je dus een hele hoop meuk aansmeren. Een fijn marketing woord is het geworden.
De ruwe natuur is er wel binnen hand bereik, dat hebben we hier niet.
Maar zoals ik het Overland wereldje ken vanuit Europa, is met je auto door Afrika of Azië rijden o.i.d.
Heel precies is het niet te definieren. Als iemand hier lekker door Europa gaat trekken met 4×4 en daktent dan heeft hij een hoop lol, maar Overlanden noem ik het niet.

Maar er zijn hier (in Canada) veel offroad wegen waar je met een Motorhome niet wilt/kan zijn. Veel mensen gebruiker dan een pick-up camper:

Ik zie ze hier ook wel eens, maar hoe zit met de toegestane daklast? Daar ga je toch ver overheen met zo’n dakkapel? Moet je er nog met z’n tweeën in gaan liggen ook.

@stalensnuitje: Dat gaat meestal prima. Je hebt een max dak last, en deze dingen vallen er vaak wel binnen met een kilo of 50 o.i.d. Deze ziet er vrij licht uit.
Bij kleine auto’s moet je wel opletten maar wordt het ook gedaan.

@fanboy: dat bedoel ik, 50kg en dan moet je er zelf nog in. Beetje volwassene van 80kg kan het dus op vrijwel elke normale auto wel vergeten.

@stalensnuitje: Veel auto’s komen wel tot een roof load van 80kg o.i.d. Dus daar ga je wel overheen als je erin ligt, dat klopt. Volgens mij is dat allemaal niet zo’n ramp, tijdens het rijden zou dat extra gewicht veel rampzaliger zijn. Die gewichten zijn denk ik ook vaak ingegeven vanwege omvallen bij slingertesten e.d.
Maar het komt meer van de echte 4×4’s die vaak een sterke dakrand hebben waar prima een heel roofrack op kan of ook zo’n ding. Die hebben vaak veel meer laad capaciteit.
Maarja, eigenlijk moet je zo min mogelijk op je dak willen. Reservewiel of evt jerrycans achterop proberen te krijgen.

@stalensnuitje: Die maximale daklast geld dan ook als je met 200km/h met je skibox naar Oostenrijk knalt.
Als je stil staat kan je er prima 3-4x zo veel op leggen, dus een daktentje en 2 volwassenen bij elkaar 200kg á 250kg is geen probleem.

@stalensnuitje: de meeste auto’s kunnen zichzelf dragen op de dakdragers als je ze er rustig op legt (en dus niet tijdens een ongeluk). Vergeet niet hoeveel krachten er op een dakkoffer worden uitgeoefend bij 130 km/u, en dat wordt zelfs in extreme situaties veilig geacht.
